The emotional burden of amputation is the focus of a speaker session at this year’s EDFN National Conference on Friday, May 8.
Specialist Podiatrist Jayne Robbie will examine the emotional burden of amputation in high-risk diabetes foot complications. It will explore not only how these conditions are treated but also what are the missed opportunities – from a person-centred perspective – that contribute to the psycho-social factors impacting amputation.
The session will help delegates:
- Identify patient-centred factors impacting amputation
- Explore individual lived experiences of amputation and its impact on the lives of service users
- Examine how lived experiences contribute to help-seeking behaviours.
Jayne, who is also a Senior Lecturer in Advancing Vascular Practice at Birmingham City University, is a diabetes specialist podiatrist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.
She has been involved with high-risk foot care for over 25 years and has published many journal articles and presented at both national and international conferences.
Jayne became the first podiatrist in the West Midlands to be accepted onto the Diabetes UK Clinical Champions programme in 2019 and now sits on their Healthcare Professionals Advisory (HPA) Committee and gave the Janet Kinson Named Lecture in 2025.
She is also co-chair of the Foot in Diabetes UK executive committee, and member of the English Diabetes Footcare Network committee and the iDEAL (Insights into Diabetes Excellence, Access and Learning) multi-professional panel.
Jayne has been pivotal in the ACT NOW campaign to raise awareness of early referral of foot problems to specialist centres to reduce amputations and was elected Dean of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow in 2025 and Fellow of the Royal College of Podiatrists in April 2023 in recognition of this work.
