New Chair of Association of British Clinical Diabetologists announced

The newly appointed Chair of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists has promised to ‘support and advocate’ for his colleagues and peers in his new role.

Professor Ketan Dhatariya, who has been an NHS consultant since 2004, will take the helm at ABCD in June 2023 when the current chair, Dr Dipesh Patel, completes his term of office.

The ABCD is a national organisation of consultant physicians in Britain who specialise in diabetes.

Leading the organisation’s committee and members, Professer Dhatariya will work to ensure its key aims and objective are met:

  • To ensure the highest quality of care for people with diabetes both in hospital and primary care
  • To promote awareness of and interest in diabetes care both locally and nationally
  • To provide a resource of information about diabetes care for purchasers and others
  • To provide high quality training in diabetes care for specialist registrars training for a CCST in diabetes and endocrinology and other medical staff involved in the care of people living with the condition
  • To encourage clinical research in diabetes in hospital clinics and jointly with primary care diabetes clinics
  • To support diabetologists dealing with management issues as they apply to the provision of diabetes services.

Professor Dhatariya said: “For the last 18 years I have tried to raise the standard of care provided for people with diabetes.

“My other roles within diabetes have given me a voice amongst my colleagues and peers. My goal is to ensure that the workforce that ABCD represent continue to be educated and supported, with their concerns and ambitions strongly advocated for.”

He added: “ABCD, working with national partners, has the power to influence policy at a governmental level.

“My goal would be to continue the work of the previous chairs in positioning ourselves as THE voice of the diabetes workforce.”

Professor Dhatariya is also Chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care Group, authoring several national guidelines on the management of various aspects of inpatient diabetes care. This includes the management of DKA as well as the guideline on perioperative diabetes care.

He is also the Chair of the Examining Board for the UK Specialist Clinical Exam in Diabetes and Endocrinology and is the immediate past president of the Diabetes and Endocrine Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Professor Dhatariya, who has been a member of ABCD since 2004 and has been part of its committee for nine years, said: “Our continued aim should be to ensure that people with diabetes are given the best care by the best workforce. My job would be to help us achieve this.”

The ABCD was established in 1997 with the principal objective of ensuring high quality care for all people living with diabetes in the UK.
