Delegates at an international thermography conference heard from a Welsh firm which has developed an innovative foot scanner that uses thermal imagery to assess foot health.
The 16th Congress of the European Association of Thermology took place at Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland this month.
Open to professionals in biomedical temperature science, the event is designed to offer scientists and those working in the industry the opportunity to exchange experiences of temperature measurement in medicine and biology.
Among those presenting were Dr Peter Plassmann, founder of Thermetrix, and the company’s senior software engineer, Dr Benjamin Kluwe.
Thermetrix has developed Podium Professional, a foot thermal imaging device which provides a high-resolution temperature map of patients’ feet. Its thermal scan reports act as additional evidence to support diagnoses and referrals. They can be used for the detection of inflammation that precedes diabetic foot ulcer development, as well as musculoskeletal trauma (MSK), vascular deficiencies, neuropathy, and acute Charcot foot.
Dr Plassmann and Dr Kluwe gave two presentations at the conference, the first of which delivered an update on preventing diabetic foot ulcers by IR imaging. The pair highlighted how they are looking at using a range of currently unused temperature map parameters to improve Podium’s detection rate.
The second presentation examined the practical problems of introducing IR technology into health services, with Dr Plassmann and Dr Kluwe exploring how regulations may need to be reviewed in order to ensure innovation in technology is not stifled.
